He has gone through extreme highs and lows during the years since that 2004 match, even disappearing for days from his team's training camps while hiding out in some of Rio's slums which he, and many other players, once called home. He then left Inter in a possible retirement phase and went through several years of trouble stemming from alcohol abuse and domestic violence. There have also been several claims he has helped former friends from the slums in shady dealings with regards to drugs, guns and money.
Adriano's on-field career seemed to come full circle when in May of 2009 he signed a one year deal to defend Rio giants Flamengo, who he grew up rooting for and started his professional career with in 2000. He seemed to be headed on the right path again, and Brazil national team coach Dunga even asked him to try to earn his spot back on the squad. When he did not, Adriano was upset, but there were no vanishings or legal problems.
Signed by Roma last week, Adriano has already played his last game for Flamengo and is ready to make his triumphant return to Romeas as its new "Imperador", at least until now.
In today's (May 31st) issue of O Dia , a daily paper in Rio, this picture surfaced showing Adriano in not such a positive manner. These pictures, according to Adriano's agent, depict Adriano and an unnamed friend posing at Adriano's house in Italy back in 2007. This agent, Gilmar Rinaldi, claims the gun Adriano is holding is just a paintball gun, and the golden version his friend is brandishing is a piece of a broke...
