Any concerns about the team's capabilities were immediately eliminated as it dominated Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal 4-0 in the opener. That was only the side's second most impressive result, as it went on to destroy host nation Brazil 7-1 in the semifinals.
The final wasn't nearly as easy, as a defensively strong Albiceleste squad was able to close down space and make it a much tighter encounter. Germany was the best team throughout the tournament, however, and Gotze provided the late winner to secure the crown without needing penalty kicks.
It marked the fourth time the Germans raised the most coveted trophy in international football. On Tuesday, they returned home to celebrate with a huge gathering of supporters.
