FIFA World Cup 2018: Triumph for Russian Bid as England and Iberia Lose

Spain and Portugal looked to have a strong bid in place with rumours of an alliance with Qatar to ensure they won the right to hold the FIFA World Cup.
Holland and the Netherlands weren't considered serious contenders heading into the voting, with the thought being that joint bids were not something that FIFA were keen on after the 2002 tournament in Korea and Japan.
England, the home of football, had put in a huge push in the last few days after their bid had run into trouble due to allegations of corruption against FIFA voting members from the British media.
Reports suggest that England were knocked out in the first round of voting, but nothing has been confirmed yet. It isn't yet clear how allegations in the British media will have impacted the voting, but the detailed voting procedures will be released later.
Russia now have a lot of work to do. There are 14 stadiums to be built, and a huge level of infrastructure must also be completed. If the work is completed on time, the first Russian World Cup could be a huge success, with a rapidly growing level of support for the game in the East European nation.
