England Exits World Cup with Just 1 Point for 1st Time

Following a 2-1 tourney-opening loss to Italy and another 2-1 defeat at the hands of Uruguay, England could only manage a scoreless tie in Tuesday's match against Costa Rica.
With Los Ticos already through to the knockout stages and The Three Lions already eliminated, the two sides played a rather lifeless game that featured a mere six shots on goal, three from each team. According to ESPN FC, England held 53 percent of the possession and took seven corner kicks to Costa Rica's three. Daniel Sturridge squandered a few excellent opportunities, but the match was otherwise defined by what didn't happen more so than what did.
As much heat as they've taken for their performance in recent World Cups, England managed to reach the knockout stages in each of the previous four tournaments, even making it to the quarter-finals in both 2002 and 2006. England have qualified for 13 of the 16 World Cups since they began participating in 1950, and only three times (1950, 1958 and 2014) have they failed to make it out of the first round.
England bowed out with two points in both 1950 and 1958, before becoming an international power in the 1960s, highlighted by a 1966 World Cup triumph on home soil. While disappointment has been commonplace since '66, group-stage exits had been unheard of, until 2014 that is.
