Carlos Vela: Why the Mexican Will Not Make It to the 2014 World Cup

This is the second time Vela declined a call-up. Last year he said he wanted to stay focused on his team (Real Sociedad) and pass on the Olympic squad—which ultimately won the gold medal.
Now, the former Arsenal forward said that he would not wear the Mexican jersey on February 6, due to personal issues.
This is a sensitive matter for two main reasons. First, Mexico is one of the most passionate countries when it comes to football; second, the fact that Vela comes from a golden generation—he was instrumental in El Tri's 2005 FIFA U-17 World Cup title—and is not giving much back, at least to the national squad, will result in unhappy fans.
It seems like Carlos has forgotten that during his time with Arsenal and West Bromwich he received several call-ups from Hugo Sanchez, Sven-Goran Eriksson and Javier Aguirre, despite his lack of play in Europe. He even had some activity in the 2010 World Cup and played the 2009 Gold Cup.
Maybe he has not thought about something. Three years ago he was one of the few Mexican footballers that played abroad and actually made a difference in the youth squads (U-17 mainly).
But times have changed and today Mexico has the toughest and brightest team it has ever had. A handful of youngsters that have proven themselves in top competitions—U-20 FIFA World Cup and Olympic Games—blend with some of the most talented veterans.
