US took the extremely early lead in the second minute, but some questionable decisions helped Marta get Brazil back in.
The US played with 10 after Rachel Buehler was sent off in the 67th minute.
Marta scored in the second minute of extra time to leave the US hanging by a thread.
A brilliant cross from Megan Rapinoe found Abby Wambach who rose to head it into the back of the net and send the game to penalties.
Daiane, who scored the own goal early to give the US the lead, saw her shot saved by Solo, and it was Ali Krieger who put the winning in two shots later.
The US will face France Wednesday in the semifinals.
