2010 FIFA World Cup: USA Soccer Needs To Win in Order To Advance the Sport

The United States has the chance to do something important and that does not start with winning the World Cup.
I'm sorry soccer fans, but the general population of sports fans don't get excited about the sport.
The United States has a chance to gain popularity into a sport that many could care less about.
One of the reasons could be the lack of scoring.
Comparing professional soccer and NHL Hockey is a good comparison when comparing the goals scored and evaluating the opportunity for the U.S. is exactly the same as the 2010 Winter Olympics.
The United States drew the attendance and viewing of the public by winning and advancing to the Gold medal final.
U.S. star Landon Donovan stated "For the last six months all we've seen is U.S.-England," said the U.S. leader with 42 goals. "And so, if you were a casual sports fan at home, you might think that this was the World Cup final."
Most of us don't know any better because we don't follow soccer. The only person we can name is David Beckham for obvious reasons.
In order for the U.S. to gain popularity into the sport they need to finish well and not exit early like last World Cup.
"This game is about where the sport is in the U.S. And so that's the opportunity we have," U.S. Soccer Federation president Sunil Gulati said. "To get a whole bunch of people that might be casual observers, to get turned on by it, to get turned on by the hype.
The truth is if the U.S. has a quick exit we will go back to not being interested but if the home town team can pull off some wins and get the public excited we will be there in the end.
America tends to root for the underdog and when the underdog loses we lose interest.
