It’s the final tournament before the start of the U.S. PGA Tour's playoffs and offers one last chance for players to climb the FedEx Cup rankings and claim a spot in the first of the four FedExCup playoffs: the August 25-28 Barclays Classic.
It has drawn maybe one of the best fields in 20 years, according to tournament director Mark Brazil. I say it's desperation from the players that could be the main reason for this tournament attracting one of its best fields.
Only the top 125 ranked players after this week qualify for the FedEx Cup playoffs, and several big names are on the bubble right now.
Some of those big names (and how they are currently ranked in the FedEx Cup standings) are Ernie Els (126th), Padraig Harrington (130th), Justin Leonard (142nd), Paul Casey (147th) and Angel Cabrera (150th).
And if you don’t think they are taking the classification seriously, Harrington even interrupted a previously planned family vacation in the Bahamas to be here, as reported by NBC Sports.
Retief Goosen (106th) is also looking to solidify his spot.
Somebody else looking to improve is defending champ Arjun Atwal (120th). He has not been able to follow up his win last year; another bad outing here will most likely take him out of the top 125.
This tournament also marks the return of Jason Dufner, just a mere four days after his memorable—to politely put it—runner-up finish at the PGA Championship. It’s back to business for Jason, and we are all looking to see how he bounces back from the biggest loss of his career.
