Wyndham Championship Is the Last Chance to Make FedEx Playoffs

The Wyndham Championship is one of the oldest events on the PGA Tour. Sam Snead won the first Greater Greensboro Open in 1938. He went on to win this event seven more times. His last official PGA win came in the 1965 Greater Greensboro Open at age 53.
Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Gary Player, Tom Weiskopf and Seve Ballesteros are all former winners here.
North Carolina native Davis Love III will be making his 19th appearance at the Wyndham Championship. He has won this event twice and has five top-10 finishes.
Sergio Garcia is the defending champion, and seven other former Wyndham champions are in the field as well.
Brandt Snedeker, Bill Haas, Zach Johnson, Webb Simpson, Martin Kaymer and Nick Watney headline the event. Ten of the top 50 players in the world are in the field this week.
The 19-year-old Jordan Spieth, who recently won the John Deere Classic, and 21-year-old Hideki Matsuyama will add youth to the field.
Matsuyama has played brilliantly in the big events this year. He finished tied for 10th in the U.S. Open, tied for sixth in the Open Championship and tied for 19th in the PGA Championship this year.
Other players will be trying to either secure their FedEx Cup position or move into the top 125 and gain entry into the lucrative FedEx Cup Playoffs.
Players currently outside the top 125 include Peter Hanson, Padraig Harrington, Bud Cauley, Tommy Gainey and Vijay Singh.
The top 125 also receive a rather healthy bonus from the $35 million FedEx Cup bonus pool. The deeper into the playoffs a player progresses, the more substantial the bonus becomes.
