Where Tiger Woods and Other Notables Stand After Day 1 of Greenbrier Classic

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, the two big names in the field, struggled to find their footing and carded over-par rounds. Newly crowned U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson is sitting comfortably at five-under par after a very solid round. Vijay Singh finds himself sitting atop the leaderboard after a superb round of 63 and holds a one-shot lead heading into Day 2 of the Greenbrier Classic.
So, let's take a look at where a few of the notable golfers stand after Thursday's first round.
Tiger Woods (+1) T. 88
After his thrilling win last week at the AT&T National, Tiger Woods didn't keep the momentum going in the first round. He carded four birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey for a round of one-over 71.
Woods' inconsistency is still his main problem, as he is unable to play consistent golf. Now, he needs to put on a stellar performance Friday if he is to make the cut.
Phil Mickelson (+1) T. 88
Phil Mickelson also struggled out there at the Old White TPC golf course. He carded three birdies, two bogeys and one double bogey to fire his own mediocre round of one-over 71.
Mickelson had his own problems out on the course, and he didn't take advantage of some scoring opportunities that could have resulted in a round under par.
Vijay Singh (-7) 1
The 49-year-old Fijan put on quite a spectacular show during Thursday's first round. He carded eight birdies and only a single bogey to shoot a seven-under 63.
Singh holds a one-shot lead over three players and is looking to win his first event since 2008. If Singh can bring the same ballgame he brought during the first round, then he could walk away with a victory.
