WGC-Bridgestone Invitational: Steve Williams Closer to Winning Than Tiger Woods

Seven times he's been on the bag for Tiger Woods when the American has won the WGC tournament in Akron, Ohio. However, after the first round of this week's WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, the New Zealand born Williams is once again topping the leaderboard, but this time he is carrying the clubs for Aussie Adam Scott who started the tournament with a tournament-record low round of 62, taking a one-shot lead at eight-under-par.
Tiger started with a round of 68 that barely keeps him inside the top 20 after the first 18 holes.
And why is Williams still carrying Scott's Titleist's instead of Tiger Nike's? Oh, Woods fired Williams for making a living, caddying a few times for Scott, while Tiger tried to come back from infidelity and injuries. To quote William Shatner as he portraits good old Buck Murdock in Airplane II: "Irony can be pretty ironic sometimes".
As expected Tiger arrived at Firestone with his childhood friend Bryon Bell on the bag. Bell, who is everything Williams is not, has done some caddying for Woods earlier and is also taking care of Tigers course design company. Bell was also the guy who fixed transportation and hotel rooms for the women Woods dated while being married. Talking about having a real friend on the bag, instead of the Best Man from your wedding who stuck around and waited for two years without pay to get ready again.
The good thing about the lumpy and nerdy Bell is that he's already on the pay role at the course design company, whereas the good thing about the sporty and dedicated Williams is that he still seems to know his way around on the South Course at Firestone just as well as Tiger did.
It looks like Williams is a lot closer his win number eight at Firestone than Tiger is.
