Shane Lowry beat World No. 1 McIlroy, 1 up, and Charles Howell III beat Woods, 2 and 1.
They were the most notable top seeds to fall, but certainly not the only ones. Upsets ruled the weather-delayed first round at the Accenture Match Play Championship.
With a desert snow storm prematurely ending the first day of competition, the second day suffered a delayed start and two matches were not completed before the daylight ran out.
However, that left plenty of time for a wild first round. Check out the list of players, along with Woods and McIlroy, to fall to lower seeds: Lee Westwood, Charl Schwartzel, Dustin Johnson, Adam Scott, Keegan Bradley, Zach Johnson, Bill Haas, Jamie Donaldson, Jason Dufner, Branden Grace, Ernie Els, Paul Lawrie.
As you can tell by that star-studded and lengthy list, things did not go according to plan. All the upsets definitely shook up the brackets—which you can view on PGATour.com.
Tiger Woods actually played really well. He just wasn't as good as Howell. Tiger hit 14-of-17 greens and 12-of-13 fairways. This pair was the only group that didn't suffer a single bogey on the day.
Tiger was not as dialed in with his distance control as he was while winning the Farmers Insurance Open, but he made up for it with putts like this from the fifth hole:
Rory McIlroy did not play as well. This birdie from the eighth hole is one of his few highlights:
That was just one of Rory's missed greens on the day. The world's No. 1 still does not look comfortable with his Nike clubs. On many shots, Rory's hands were not getting through on time and he was pushing his shots to the right.
He battled and hung in there, but he clearly did not have his A game.
