USGA Looks to Canadian Tour for Help with Ball Distance

Gary Player, no stranger to hyperbole, earlier this month advocated that the golf ball distance should be rolled back 40 or 50 yards for professional players. In addition to the Black Knight, no less an authority than Jack Nicklaus has for years criticized the increase in golf ball distance as a threat to some of the world's classic golf courses.

For its part, the U.S. Golf Association publicly has mostly stayed away from regulating golf ball technology while clamping down on club technology. The new grooves rule, which went into effect this year, is a prime example of the USGA's efforts to control the golf ball without actually addressing the ball.

That might be changing. The USGA reportedly has asked three golf ball manufacturers to each develop a prototype ball that travels 10 to 20 percent less than the current crop of balls.

According to the Winnipeg Free Press, the USGA next month wants to get as many as two dozen Canadian Tour players to play with the ball (or balls) in a one-day tournament of sorts the Monday after a regular Canadian Tour. That event is yet to be determined or made public.

It's interesting that the USGA is looking to the Canadian Tour as a guinea pig. The Canadian Tour does not fall under the jurisdiction of the USGA but instead its sister rules-making body—Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, Scotland.

No doubt the R&A has signed off on the experiment, but the fact that the USGA wants to go north of the border speaks to the sensitivity of the golf ball issue.

Presumably, the USGA will use the data it collects as ammunition for when—and if—it decides to directly take on the distance issue. That day is still a ways down the road but might be getting closer. I've always believed it will be around the 2013 U.S. Open at Merion. I haven't changed my mind.
