Defending champion Michelle Wie was in control of the tournament last year at Pinehurst No. 2; however, she's struggled to duplicate her success on the LPGA Tour since. Due to a nagging hip injury—one that has plagued her for years but has worsened recently—Wie has missed five cuts and withdrawn from three tournaments in her last 24 starts. In an effort to overcome the injury, she has attempted to revamp her swing.
Wie has calmed her swing down lately, decreasing the width in her stance to reduce the vicious torque through the ball. She spoke of how the changes have felt during an interview with Ryan Ballengee of Yahoo Sports, saying, "Just with everything in general, I'm feeling healthier and healthier. My hip felt better in Arkansas than it has been the pass couple of weeks. And I think I'm taking it day-by-day and taking it slowly."
Although, Wie hasn't been the only U.S. Open participant in the news of late. According to Ron Sirak of Golf Digest, two-time 2015 LPGA Tour winner Sei Young Kim will have to navigate Lancaster Country Club without her caddie after he was caught taking pictures of hole locations with his cell phone—a breach of USGA sanctions.
