One day after collapsing on the course due to vertigo during his final hole, Day bravely continued his quest for his first-ever Major title, shooting a 68 for a share of the lead heading into the tournament's final day.
Day will be part of the final pairing on Sunday. He's in a four-way tie for the lead at four under par with Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth and Branden Grace.
The links at Chambers Bay proved to be challenging once again, with just six players shooting below par. Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa was the best of the bunch with a 66—rebounding from a 77 in Round 1 to reach one under par, just three shots behind the leaders.
Saturday's final pairing of Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed went in opposite directions on Moving Day. Tied at -5 to start the day, Spieth started strong and finished with a 71, while Reed's three double bogeys earned him a 76 and left him five shots off the pace.
For Jason Day, his first-place tie is his best-ever positioning at a major after 54 holes. His achievement is all the more remarkable because he continued to experience his vertigo symptoms on Saturday, particularly on the back nine.
Sick or not, he'll play the biggest round of his career—with plenty of competition—when the U.S. Open wraps up from the Pacific Northwest on Sunday.
