US Open Golf 2013: Players Who Will Struggle to Rebound from Poor Showing

While household names like Phil Mickelson and Luke Donald collapsed late, other notable players struggled so much that they weren’t even relevant by Round 4. Here are those players, ones who will want to forget their performance this weekend as fast as possible.
But the loss will linger.
Tiger Woods
Woods’ combined score in his last two PGA Tour events is 21-over. He started off the season so strong, winning four of his first seven tournaments. Heavily favored to win at Merion, he barely competed.
The Official World Golf Ranking’s No. 1 ranked player finished tied for 32nd with a score of 13-over.
When Saturday began, he was in striking distance of the leader. Seven bogeys later, he had only pride to play for on Father’s Day. He couldn’t even do that as he bogeyed four more times and triple bogeyed another.
His drought without a major is now five years long. In the U.S. Open, he showed no signs of being able to end it anytime soon.
Sergio Garcia
Garcia failed to bounce back from his choke job in The Players Championship. He finished the tournament tied for 45th with a score of 15-over. While he hit for par quite often, two double bogeys, a triple bogey, a quadruple bogey and a sextuple bogey—he hit a 10 a par four—buried him.
Considering the pressure which will follow him after his “fried chicken” comment directed toward Woods, it will be incredibly difficult for Garcia to recover—especially considering his history of a lack of mental toughness.
As of now, he’s rated the No. 15 player on the planet by the Official World Golf Ranking. Don’t expect that number to drop.
