Kaymer opened the tournament with a record-setting 36-hole aggregate of 130 and a six shot lead over the rest of the field, but shot a two-over 72 on Saturday to shrink the lead to five going into Sunday's action.
Kaymer countered a couple of early bogeys with a stunning eagle on the fifth hole, but couldn't maintain the same consistency as his earlier rounds through the late going on Moving Day. After the round, he said he was satisfied with his performance on a day when challenging pin positions wreaked havoc on the field.
Rickie Fowler will join Kaymer in the final pair on Sunday after shooting an impressive 67 on Saturday thanks to just 24 putts. Tied with Fowler at three under is Erik Compton, the double heart transplant recipient playing in just the second major of his career.
Just six players came through Saturday's action under par. Henrik Stenson and Dustin Johnson sit at two under par through 54 holes, while Brandt Snedeker is at one under par.
Like he did at the Players Championship last month, Kaymer will try to post a rare wire-to-wire U.S. Open win when the final-round action gets underway at Pinehurst No. 2 on Sunday.
