U.S. Women’s Open Golf 2011: Cristie Kerr Tied for Lead, Day 1 Play Suspended

Play was suspended due to lightning in the area at 12:47 p.m. Less than three hours later, play was called for the day at 3:11 p.m., with only 25 players having completed their first round and 72 players yet to tee off.
The No. 2 player in the world, Cristie Kerr, and soon-to-be 19-year-old amateur Amy Anderson appear atop the abbreviated Day 1 leader board with two-under-par totals—Kerr through 15 holes and Anderson through 12.
Kerr didn't express much optimism with the stormy weekend forecast.
"I have finished plenty of U.S. Opens on Monday," she said outside the media center following her play. "It's a big field. If you get any weather whatsoever the first couple days with this size field, you're not going to finish."
Similar conditions with suspended play were present at last year's U.S. Women's Open at Oakmont Country Club, but the tournament was completed in time on Sunday.
"It is what it is," Kerr said matter-of-factly. "This is my 15th year on tour, 16th year being a professional. This stuff happens all the time. You have to kind of roll with the punches."
Closely behind Kerr and Anderson is a trio at two-under par—Inbee Park through 17 holes, Ai Miyazato through No. 15 and Silvia Cavalleri after only one hole.
Other notables are Karrie Webb (even par after 15 holes), Natalie Gulbis (two-over par through 17 holes) and Juli Inkster, one of the aforementioned 25 players to finish her round, at three-over par.
Defending U.S. Women's Open champion Paula Creamer was never able to get on the golf course because of the inclement weather.
The first round will resume at 7:45 a.m. local time Friday.
