Horschel has been hot for the FedEx Cup playoffs, finishing as a runner-up two weeks ago at the Deutsche Bank Championship, then winning the BMW Championship.
Tied for the lead at East Lake after the first round, Horschel carded a 66 on Friday to move two shots ahead of his closest rivals at eight under par. He was able to overcome two bogeys on the front nine to surge to the top of the leaderboard with a strong back nine.
If Horschel wins this weekend, he'll also win the FedEx Cup playoff, and the accompanying $10 million prize.
Other playoff contenders still in the hunt are Chris Kirk and Rory McIlroy, who sit two shots back at six under. McIlroy shot the low round of the week so far, a 65, to move himself into contention heading into the weekend.
Friday was also a good day for Jason Day. After pulling out of the BMW Championship last week with back issues, he hovered near the top of the leaderboard for most of the day before recording his first bogey of the tournament on the 18th hole to fall off the pace.
Horschel's wife is due to give birth to their first child in two weeks. The couple has agreed that he'll stay and play if she goes into labour early. With a prize of more than $10 million within his grasp, Horschel's well-positioned to give his baby a very good start in life if he continues to play consistent golf.
