It is normal procedure for the top ranked players in the tournament to participate in the Tuesday press conference for the assembled media at the tournament site.
Tiger has chosen to bow out of the weekly presser at Quail Hollow. Instead, he did a 14-minute video chat posted to his website that addressed questions that had been emailed or tweeted to him.
All of the tough questions were answered by Tiger himself:
- How many practice rounds do you play prior to a tournament?
- How do you test new equipment?
- Which major trophy do you like the best?
- What is in the small bottles that you drink on the course?
The video contained riveting, hard-driving information from the 14-time major champion.
Tiger has an ongoing confrontational attitude with the golf media and routinely refuses requests for one on one interviews.
He is a total control freak and would not want an interviewer to ask a question that might make him uncomfortable or upset.
Yes, he has a right for some personal space and private life.
No, he does not have the right to skip press conferences at PGA Tour events. He is the biggest name and draw at those weekly tournaments.
When the PGA Tour circus rolls into town it is a big deal, and people want to hear from Woods.
He has an obligation to that tournament and the PGA Tour to help promote both through the media.
If Tiger wants to post a video and connect with his fans on his website, I applaud that effort.
If he does it to avoid facing the professional golf media, I do not.
