Tiger had an excellent day in Akron as he started off with some great drives and played mistake-free golf. He was able to get off to a great start on a day that will be very similar to what he will see on Kiawah Island on Thursday. The biggest battle that he will face in the Tour Championship is the weather on the Ocean Course, and it was windy today in Akron similar to how it is in Charleston.
Tiger was able to fight the elements and should be able to take this momentum into a frustratingly difficult Kiawah Island course. Kiawah Island's Ocean Course was designed by legendary golf course architect, Pete Dye. Dye designed the course to have all 18 holes with a view of the Atlantic Ocean and be one that is completely aggravating to play on.
Woods should enjoy it, though. Golf is a battle between golfer and the architect of the golf course more than it is a battle between the golfers. Pete Dye tries to be like an NFL defensive coordinator who disguises blitzes and coverages when going against the top quarterbacks in the league.
He was quoted about his design of the course saying, "I try to do things that drive the pros crazy. If you don't get some emotion out of them, you're doing something wrong," (h/t John Berry of The Lake County Record-Bee).
Tiger should enjoy the views, though, and his yacht is already in harbor. He should be able to build on the momentum from his four-under front nine holes in Akron and turn in a top performance at the tour championships when the top pros come to Charleston for the Tour Championships.
