The Tiger Woods Saga: What Is the Media’s Purpose?

I am not a part of the media. It is not for a lack of effort, though. I have had a column at The Entertainment Magazine for almost five years. I write under my pen name J. Floyd King at EMOL.org on topics from movies to politics in an examination of pop culture.

I have written over 80 articles here at Bleacher Report, where I am able to give my takes on the sporting world. I chose to use my real name at this site, but I forget what the purpose was for that now.

I don't understand the purpose of the media in 2010, and yet I still try to become a part of it with every article I write. Media members like Jim Rome, Jason Whitlock, Glenn Parker, and Christine Brennan seem to have a nice way of making a living, plus they all get into sporting events for free. Beyond that, my attempt to join the media is a fulfilling hobby where I am read everyday on the Internet.

The Tiger Woods saga has really pointed out to me that the media is this blind entity shouting from a mountain top to anyone that will listen. Follow this timeline and see if you get where I am coning from:

On Wednesday, Tiger Woods's people announced he was going to speak.

On Thursday, every talking head in front of a microphone or with a computer all said and wrote what Tiger should say and how he should say it.

On Friday, Tiger spoke.

Since then, every talking head in front of a microphone or with a computer has broken down how Tiger came off in his 13.5 minute speech.

All of this exposure for a guy that can hit a golf ball better than anyone else ever has. Am I the only one who finds all of this nuts?

What is the purpose of the media? Are they there to report on a guy who can hit a golf ball really good? Are they there to build that guy up? Are they there to tear that guy down?

Since the answer appears to be yes to the last three questions, how do you go about answer...
