Spieth's poor first round ultimately doomed him. Despite a somewhat up and down Round 2, he still finished at even par. But it wasn't good enough for Spieth to get above the line after his 3-over 75 in Round 1. He was one of a number of stars removed from contention heading into the weekend.

Really tough ball-striking day. I just couldn't find anything, really since I have gotten here on Monday. I mentioned it in the press conference that I was struggling hitting the ball this week; that I was looking for something in my alignment. I just didn't quite trust it today until I was already too far behind the 8-ball.
On Friday, it was one step forward, one step back for Spieth. He followed each of his three birdies with a bogey. After he carded a bogey on No. 14, that all but confirmed he wouldn't be making an appearance this weekend. According to Golf Channel's Justin Ray, he's the first Masters champion in a little over a decade to turn around and miss the cut at the Players Championship:
