The Heritage: Old Faithful Propels Garrett Willis to the Lead in Hilton Head

The No. 262 player in the world fired an impressive seven-under-par 64 to take a one-shot lead over a group at six-under that includes Chad Campbell, Tim Heron, Arjun Atwal and Matt Bettencourt.
Willis opened his round in dramatic fashion by birdying six holes in a row after parring the first hole on the day. He dropped a few shots, bogeying the ninth and 11th holes, but quickly made those strokes up, birdying the 12th, 15th and 16th holes en route to his 64 and the overnight lead.
The putter is what really caught fire for Willis on Thursday, and funny enough, that is what he was struggling with most of the week and the 2001 season leading up to the Heritage.
Garrett must have had at least 10 putters with him this week leading up to the first round. He tried everything just to see if something would click. Willis even went to the all-of-a-sudden-new-rage-on-tour belly putter in his practice round on Tuesday. But as he said, he just couldn't pull the trigger with any of them.
On Thursday, as Willis went to the range to warm up for the first round, he told his caddy to run back to his car and get "Old Faithful."
“I haven’t missed a tournament in five years with it. So like I said, I’ve been having 31, 32, 33 putts a round, which is leading to a lot of missed cuts. And this week is the week I’m going to break away, I’m going to do it, I’m going to switch. I say that almost every week, but I don’t have the guts enough to do it; luckily it paid off.”
And did it ever pay off for Willis.
