Europe entered the day leading 8-5 with three of the fourball matches still to be completed, and major controversy struck almost immediately in the match between the duo of Pettersen and Charley Hull and Alison Lee and Brittany Lincicome.
With the two teams all square, Lee missed a birdie putt that would have given the USA the 17th, and while the European team started walking away, Lee picked up the ball, as she thought it had been conceded.
Pettersen denied conceding the putt, however, leaving the American team speechless and down a shot. Europe would eventually win the match two up, but the incident left a bitter taste in just about everyone's mouth. Both Lee and Hull were seen crying, and plenty of pundits and fellow golfers hammered Pettersen for her decision, including Eddie Pepperell:

Even Dame Laura Davies, who played in 12 Solheim Cups, was “disgusted” by what she saw. Speaking to Sky Sports 4 (h/t Press Association, for the Daily Mail), she said:
