In the end, D.A. Points finished off a superb Sunday performance to take home the title at Redstone GC.
Points, an Illinois native, had missed the cut in every event this year before shooting a magnificent 16-under par to win in Houston.
He needed every stroke to win the event, including a clutch par putt on the 18th green to secure the lead for good.
Both Bill Haas and Stewart Cink led the field heading into Sunday but couldn’t hold serve as the final round played on. Cink needed to hole out on the 18th to tie Points, but his shot from the bunker fell way short of the green.
Meanwhile, Phil Mickelson may not have had a fairytale final round, but he played well enough to be encouraged with the Masters two weeks away.
Lefty finished four under on the day, including an impressive nine-under total for the weekend. At one point, he was only one shot off the leaders, but it was not to be.
