Ryder Cup 2014 Results: Updated Standings and Predictions After Day 2 Foursomes

The Europeans extended their lead after a huge afternoon session in foursomes.
Victor Dubuisson and Graeme McDowell dismantled Jimmy Walker and Rickie Fowler, 5 & 4. The pairings of Sergio Garcia, Rory McIlroy, Jamie Donaldson and Lee Westwood also came out victorious. Europe took 3.5 out of the four possible points in the afternoon.
Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed were the only Americans to get a result.
Despite being in a huge hole, Team USA can remain optimistic for a few reasons. The first being there are 12 available points tomorrow. Even though it’s unlikely, they’re not mathematically eliminated whatsoever.
More importantly, the Americans know this comeback can be completed. The Europeans faced the exact same deficit in 2012 before winning 8.5 points on Sunday to get the win.
Here are the singles matchups that will take place on Sunday to decide the 40th Ryder Cup.
Predictions
Although Europe showed this lead isn’t insurmountable at Medinah in 2012, it doesn’t seem likely for this American team to overcome. The Europeans behind their home-field advantage will be energized to close this thing out.
In order to nip the American hopes right in the bud, captain Paul McGinley is sending out three of his most successful players early in the day. Combined, McDowell, Stenson and McIlroy have earned seven of a possible nine points.
Unfortunately for the USA, its best golfers have been rookies Patrick Reed and Jordan Speith. They remain undefeated (halved foursomes), but it’s a lot to ask of two youngsters to get two points on a Sunday morning at the Ryder Cup.
