Have you ever been to Newport, Wales in October? Here's a hint. It's nothing like Newport Beach, California.
In other words, it's cold and it rains...sheep. Big soggy, wet, sloppy sheep.
The average temperature is 15 degrees C. For Friday, Saturday and Sunday the chances of rain runs about 90 percent. If we're lucky the high temp may sky to 16C. In other words, typical Wales in October, the rainiest month in the rainiest spot on the west coast. Wet. Soggy. Sheep.
How many other golf courses have a brigade of squeegee-ers at ready? Are there that many experienced homeless people living in Wales? Did they run an ads for temps in London? "WE NEED EXPERIENCED SQUEEGEE OPERATORS!"
Despite the wretched conditions we saw a few flickers of brilliant golf.
Stewart Cink sank a 40' putt. Amazing. And yes, this was the same Stewart Cink that Corey Pavin neglected to introduce during the formal team introductions. Darn you, Lisa Pavin, Corey needs to concentrate.
That putt was a thing of beauty, especially in these conditions. It was as beautiful as it was impossible. It was impossibly beautiful.
And the kids, Bubba Watson and Jeff Overton? Wow! Putt in from off the edge of the green. Super shot, Mr. Overton! Leading two-up after two. We expect you to smoke them. No pressure, kids, but all the old guys seem to be a little arthritic in the deep damp. Make us proud.
