Rory McIlroy Talks with Media at the Memorial Tournament

“Sometimes when you lose you really win.”
Rory McIlroy lost his fiance last week but collected his first win of 2014 at the BMW PGA Championship on the European Tour.
The Daily Mail UK reported that McIlroy announced that he had officially broken off his engagement with tennis star Caroline Wozniacki in a press conference prior to the start of the BMW PGA Championship.
They had dated for over two years and had become engaged over the holidays last year. The couple was planning a large wedding to be held in New York in August of this year.
All that appears moot, and the wedding invitations that went into the mail last week will hit the recycling bin this week.
McIlroy made his way to Dublin, Ohio, this week to compete in the Memorial Tournament hosted by Jack Nicklaus. He addressed the media after his pro-am round on Wednesday.
He said all the right things:
“I am delighted to be back at Muirfield Village, it is one of the best events on tour.”
Commenting about his golf game:
“Obviously coming off the back of a win last week, my game feels in really good shape.”
When he was queried about the difference between playing well and not winning versus finally winning, he answered:
“I had three really bad Fridays in a row, Masters, Quail Hollow, and TPC. I think those really held me back. I didn’t have one of those stretches last week. So it’s being able to turn those 74s and 75s into 71s. It makes a lot of difference.”
