Rory McIlroy Misses Cut at the Irish Open on European Tour

McIlroy continued to struggle off the tee on Thursday in the first round. He hit only five of 14 fairways. Although he did manage to hit 14 greens in regulation, 34 putts on the Montgomerie Course greens at Carton House Golf Club proved to be a few too many. He also failed to convert sand saves in four of five opportunities in the first round.
This is just his second missed cut of the year, both coming on the European Tour. In addition to the Irish Open, he missed the cut in his first start of the year in Abu Dhabi. He did withdraw from the Honda Classic on the PGA Tour during the second round.
McIlroy has played in ten events on the PGA Tour in 2013. He has made nine cuts, has had four top-10 finishes and earned nearly $1.4 million.
Most touring professionals would be very happy with these numbers for the year.
His best finish in 2013 thus far was runner-up at the Valero Texas Open in early April. Over his last five tournaments, he has finished T-25 at the Masters, T-10 at the Wells Fargo, T-8 in the Players, T-57 at Muirfield Village, T-41 in the U.S. Open and now a missed cut in Ireland.
These are certainly not results befitting the No. 2 player in the world.
As reported by Golf Channel, McIlroy addressed the media yesterday after his first round and commented, “No aspects of my game are strong and I’m just feeling a bit lost at the moment. The game is just not coming easy to me… I don’t know whether it’s a matter of trying to play my way out of it or just keep grinding away on the range or whatever.”
