Rory McIlroy Earns 2012 PGA Tour Player of the Year Honor

Behind four victories and 10 top-10 finishes, Rory McIlroy claimed PGA TOUR Player of the Year honors for 2012, the TOUR announced on Tuesday.
McIlroy, 23, becomes the youngest player to earn Player of the Year honors since Tiger Woods in 1998. He receives the Jack Nicklaus Award in recognition of being voted Player of the Year.
Through the first half of the 2012 season, McIlroy probably would have never imagined that he'd be selected for this prestigious award.
After finishing 40th at The Masters, McIlroy missed the cut in three of the next five PGA tournaments in which he played, including the U.S. Open.
Following his disappointing performance at The Olympic Club, McIlroy finished 60th at the British Open and was never a real contender over the final two rounds.
That's when it all changed for McIlroy. In his next six tournaments, McIlroy finished in the top 10 five times, winning three events, including a dominating victory at the PGA Championship in South Carolina.
He will likely maintain his No. 1 ranking going into the 2013 season, and he will be expected to add to his major championship total, which currently stands at two.
McIlroy's ability to bounce back from a terrible start to the 2012 season and finish with multiple victories in some of the top tournaments in the second half of the year made him a leading candidate for this award.
This honor is well deserved. McIlroy will be one of the top players for golf fans to watch next season.
