McIlroy, who entered the week 38th in the FedEx Cup playoffs, was five strokes off the lead pace when he walked off the course with the afternoon wave of play just getting started. The event's 2012 champion shot an even-par 71 in Friday's opening round.

McIlroy is in the process of trying to sort out putting problems that have lingered throughout the season. He's shown at least some signs of progress this week after hiring coach Phil Kenyon, which was one of his goals coming into the event, per Keith Jackson of Sky Sports.
"I'm in constant touch with Phil," McIlroy said. "I feel like he's obviously the way to go for me right now and we'll see how it goes and work hard at it and hopefully I start to see little improvements each and every week."
The 27-year-old Northern Irishman came out firing on all cylinders Saturday. He displayed perfect touch on his approach into the par-five second to set himself up for an easy birdie. On the third hole, he showcased some of those positive putting strides with a make from just outside 18 feet for birdie.

His charge stalled out during the middle portion of the front nine as he carded bogeys on the fourth and sixth, but the four-time major champion recovered nicely. That's been the theme of the tournament so far after he fought back to even in the first round after falling to four-over through three holes.
