Well, there is another side to professional golf. One that many stories originate from but are seldom told. Tales that have less glamour and money than they do on the PGA tour.
No plush five star resorts on a private island. No private planes taking you to private cars to whisk you away to some villa where you will stay the week preparing for a tournament with a purse of over a million dollars.
No, this is something entirely different than you may see on the PGA tour....Welcome to the life of a mini tour player.
I play on a professional golf mini tour here in the Southeast United States. It runs from January until September. We play on courses all over the Southeast, mostly around Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.
Nice courses mind you. Just not Pebble Beach, St. Andrews or Augusta.
I'm not going to get into the entire season, just a brief glimpse of what life can be like on a mini tour.
Traveling while on the mini tours is not private jets or anything plush like what you will find on the PGA tour -- unless you count my 2003 Mitsubishi Outlander SUV as plush. Driving two-four hours to stay in a Best Western hotel somewhere near the course you are playing in a town most people have probably never even heard of.
I usually arrive on late Thursday night or Friday morning so I can play a practice round if I havn't played this particular course before. Or just to make sure everything is in order with my game.
