The American team leads the International team 13-9 through the first four sessions. Team USA has beaten the International squad six times, lost one and tied one. This week was potentially a good omen for the International team, as the host course, Royal Melbourne Golf Club, was the site of the only International win, which came in 1998.
Unfortunately for Greg Norman and his team, it has not worked that way. The Americans have battled poor performances for the top names on the squad, notably Tiger Woods and Dustin Johnson, but enter the final day with a commanding 13-9 lead, needing 17.5 points to keep the Presidents Cup.
Jim Furyk has been the top player for the American squad thus far, going 4-0 through team play. The first three sessions, he was partnered with Phil Mickelson. They beat Refief Goosen and Robert Allenby 4 and 3 in foursomes, Adam Scott and K.T. Kim 2 and 1 in four-ball and Aaron Baddeley and Jason Day 2 and 1 in foursomes.
Mickelson was rested on Saturday afternoon and Furyk was paired with Nick Watney in four-ball play. The American duo survived a tough contest in the final match of the day, beating Adam Scott and Ernie Els 1 up.
Woods lost his opening session in definitive fashion, as he and Steve Stricker fell 7 and 6 to the International duo of Adam Scott and K.J. Choi.
After that, American captain Fred Couples paired Woods with Johnson for the remaining three sessions. The American duo struggled, notably with the putter, en route to a 1-2 record.
Choi leads the International squad in points with three.
Final round coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. EST on the Golf Channel.
