With his second four-under 68 in as many rounds, Kirk moved to 10 under par for the tournament. That puts him one shot ahead of Kevin Kisner, Ben Martin and Bill Haas. Meanwhile, Kevin Na and Jerry Kelly, who shared the lead after three rounds, remained stuck at eight under after each shot even par Saturday.
Here's a look at when each of the remaining golfers will tee off Sunday.
Kirk isn't exactly a household name for golf fans, but ESPN.com's Jason Sobel believes that the 30-year-old's talent flies under the radar:
Winning the Players Championship would certainly help Kirk make a name for himself on the PGA Tour. CBS Sports' Kyle Porter thinks Kirk could also rub the victory in the face of Tom Watson, who famously left him off the 2014 Ryder Cup team:
Kirk has been one of the more consistent golfers at TPC Sawgrass this year. All three of his rounds have been under par so far, and he has just four bogeys over 54 holes.
Still, with so many golfers so tightly packed near the top of the leaderboard, it seems highly likely that the lead will change hands multiple times Sunday.
Justin Thomas could be a major wild card. He entered Round 3 well off of the lead but ended it just two shots off Kirk after posting the lowest score of the round: a seven-under 65. Even more impressive, he still had a great day despite somehow doing this on a drive, per Sean Martin of PGATour.com:
Thomas has steadily improved as the tournament has gone on. He shot a 73 and 70 over the first two rounds before his Saturday outburst.
