For the third straight major tournament this year, Day held a share of the lead heading into the final round.
This time, there was no catching him. His lead never shrank to less than one shot as he set a new mark in major history, going five under par to finish at -20.
Challengers like Branden Grace, Justin Rose and Brooks Koepka took their best shots at going low but Sunday's action was ultimately a duel between Day and Jordan Spieth.
With two majors already to his name this year, Spieth gave up one shot to Day on Sunday, but was a winner in his own way. His solo second-place finish moves him into the World No. 1 position over Rory McIlroy, who finished the week at nine under par.
Spieth also wraps up the 2015 major schedule at a record-setting 54 under par, breaking the old mark of -53 set by Tiger Woods back in 2000.
For Day, the 27-year-old becomes the fifth Australian to win the PGA championship and the first to win a major since Adam Scott took the Green Jacket at the 2013 Masters.
