Birdie 10, Birdie 11, Birdie 12, Birdie 13, Birdie 14, Par 15 (what happened there?), Birdie 16, and Birdie 17.

How's that for a scorecard to start off the back nine of a PGA Tour event?

And no, this is not a dream or a script for a Hollywood golf film.

No, this is exactly what Paul Goydos did in the first round of the John Deere Classic on Thursday.

His front nine was not as birdie-filled but was a very respectable four-under-par with birdies on two, four, six, and seven that took him out with a 31 on the card.

And then, as if lifted by something larger, he just found himself "in the field" as Bagger Vance would say. Goydos began his assault on the course and his march towards golf's elusive 59.

The 118th-ranked player in the FedEx Cup has had only two top 10s this season on tour, has earned just $583,892, and is sitting in the 137th spot on the official golf world rankings list.

But oh how things can change in a hurry on the PGA Tour, especially after you have a chance to shoot a 59.

Goydos, with only one win since 2006, has had only a handful of top 10 performances in that same span. But as of July 8, 2010 the Long Beach, CA native will forever be linked to one of the all-time milestones any golfer wishes to achieve.

With a nice approach shot on 18, Goydos left himself with about a seven-foot putt for his eighth birdie on the back nine (12th overall) and a shot at what only three PGA Tour players before him have ever been able to do.

A 59 on the PGA Tour.

As he stepped up and addressed the ball for what might have been the biggest putt of his life, one can only imagine what was going through his mind.

He sized it up from every angle he could, addressed the ball, took one last glance at the cup, and rolled his seven-foot putt towards history.

MONEY!!!
