SMU's Bryson Dechambeau had to sit through a rain delay that lasted over an hour and had to withstand the furious push from Cheng-Tsung Pan, who shot a scintillating five-under for the day. But when the dust settled, Dechambeau won the individual national championship, finishing at eight under after notching a one-under 71 on the evening.
SMU Athletics tweeted Dechambeau's achievement after the event:
An emotional Dechambeau talked about his victory after clinching the title.
"I've worked so hard for this moment, and I can't even imagine what just happened right now," he said on the Golf Channel broadcast. "It's been a long time coming, and I'm so honored to have won this title."
He also won with class, per the Golf Channel on Twitter:
It was a bit of a surprise title for Dechambeau, who had only two previous NCAA wins coming into the tournament (though he did come into the tournament hot, with four straight top-five finishes). But he was as steady as they come over his four rounds, finishing under par in each one.
He also proved to be a memorable character during the event. He had the country buzzing given his unique set of clubs, which all measure at the same length, and also played a shot out of the water with nothing but his pants on earlier in the tournament.
