Masters Scores: Fred Couples Claws into Contention with Fast Second Round Start

The last time Fred Couples, the 51-year-old, former Masters champion won a PGA tournament came way back in 2003. The last time he won a major came in 1992, when he won his first (and only) title at the Masters.
But, now, in 2011, Couples has used a torrid start to his second round to vault into contention, shooting a three-under par through his first seven holes to move to four under overall, just three shots back of leaders Y.E. Yang, Rory McIlroy and K.J. Choi.
Couples' first-round efforts were largely unspectacular, birdieing three holes and bogeying two others to sit solidly at 1-under coming into today.
But, so far on Friday, Couples has used some favorable playing conditions conducive to low scores to hole three birdies, on the second, fourth and seventh holes, and now sits well within striking distance.
Couples has always played Augusta National solidly, and given the conditions today, there's a great chance his got streak could continue through the round.
Should Fred rally enough to take his second green jacket, the 51-year-old would pass Jack Nicklaus as the oldest major champion in history. Nicklaus was 46 when he won the 1986 Masters.
There's obviously still plenty of golf to be played between the azaleas, but given the conditions, it's hard to imagine Couples struggling against the elements this weekend.
Look for Couples to remain a factor throughout the round today, and if he can avoid trouble, he's still got enough skills to stay in contention till Sunday. In the end, I don't think he'll win it, but he could certainly be a major player in the title hunt.
