Masters Leaderboard Day 2: K.J. Choi Jumps Atop the Leaderboard on Day 2

The 2011 Masters Tournament has certainly lived up to the hype of being the most wide open field in recent memory, as yet another golfer has ridden a hot streak to the top of the heap.
41-year-old K.J. Choi of Korea has parlayed his late-round success on Thursday into a strong start to Friday's second round, and sits atop the leaderboard at eight-under par through his first six holes of the second round.
Choi sat two shots back of the leaders after Thursday's round, using a strong finish in which he birdied five of his last six holes to score a five-under 67 for the day.
That torrid finish has carried over into the early holes today, as the nine-time PGA Tour event winner has hit birdie on three of his first six holes of the day, moving to eight-under and holding a one-shot lead on Rory McIlroy atop the tournament standings.
Choi has never won a major tournament, but his best finishes have come at Augusta, where he's finished tied for third and tied for fourth, in 2004 and 2010 respectively.
Given what we've seen on the course in the early going today, odds are good that Choi's lead won't hold, as numerous golfers, from Fred Couples to Y.E. Yang to Ricky Barnes have all posted strong scores in the early portion of their rounds.
The key for Choi will be consistency. He managed to finish an otherwise pedestrian round incredibly strongly on Thursday, and he'll have to avoid late-round struggles today, if he hopes to keep a position at or near the top of the leaderboard.
Even so, given what we've seen from him this weekend, look for Choi to be near the top of the leaderboard at the end of the week.
