Masters: Can Jim Furyk Climb the Leaderboard on Moving Day?

For all he's achieved--a US Open title, 16 PGA wins, a Player of the Year award--a quirky swing is probably what people think of first when they see Jim Furyk.
That's a shame considering a string of remarkable finishes in major championships. He's finished in the Top Five 10 times and been a Top 10 finisher at Augusta National four times.
Now, despite winning the FedEx Cup last year, Furyk didn't play great in the majors, never finishing higher than 16th and was cut from the British Open and the Masters, where he shot an opening round 80.
But the soon-to-be 41-year old is off to a great start this year at Augusta National. After an even par 72 on Thursday, he shot a four-under 68, that featured five birdies.
At four-under for the championship, Furyk still has a lot of work to make some major noise. But consider this: Furyk is playing the par-fives at just three-under, three birdies in eight tries.
He's never been a long hitter so going for the green in two to land a critical eagle-three is not always an option as it is for Tiger Woods or Rory McIlory. But if he can turn a few of those pars into birdies he will be able to stay in contention. And considering how well he hits his irons, look for him to be in position to make birdies at the par-fours when others are just happy to get up and down for pars.
