As reported by Mike McAllister of PGATour.com, Spieth became the first player to reach 19 under at Augusta. He posted a record 28 birdies, making Sunday's play feel like a formality. This is the mark of a winner. If there's no drama heading into the final round, the player at the top has done his job.
While the favourite before the tournament, McIlroy fell alarmingly short of the standards many expected. In truth, he rarely threatened to land the Grand Slam and make up for his collapse in 2011.
At Spieth's age, McIlroy dropped six shots in three holes along the final day's back nine, allowing Charl Schwartzel to nick the lead. Spieth showed no sign of losing his composure in a watershed moment for his career.
