Masters 2011: What Are We to Make of Lee Westwood’s Legacy?

Without a doubt the "Best Player Never To Have Won A Major" on the Tour today is Britain's Lee Westwood. Everyone knows that....although before I had never quite seen it put the way the Toronto Star's Ken Fidlin did, branding him with the Scarlett Acronym: BPNTHWAM.
But while a win by Westwood--the second ranked player in the World--would shed that undesirable label from his resume, it doesn't necesarily make him one of the PGA "elite."
There is an inherant problem with a player like Westwood's legacy. Like Gary Player did decades ago, Westwood doesn't play that many US Tournaments. He only played 11 last season and eight times the year before. He's opted to play far more European tournaments.
So his record of only two PGA (of America) victories is a totally skewed number.
And since he has finished in the top three at five of the last 10 majors in which he's appeared, he is playing some great golf in his mid-30s.
But even if he does win a Green Jacket this week, or claims a Clarett Jug in July, or any single major title this year, he has yet to prove he's one of the truly top golfers of the last decade or so. It might just take that one to "get him over the hump" and a win this would could spark a handful of majors, much like Phil Mickelson needed back in 2004.
And if that happens he deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Retief Goosen, Ernie Els, Padraig Harrington, and the other multi-major winners who are just a tier below Tiger and Phil.
But should Westwood retire with just one major title during more than two decades in the spotlight, he will carry some "one-hit-wonder" status to his legacy. That's not fair, since he's won so many tournaments had had some great finishes in majors. But that's the golf world we live in today. It's about major WINS. Just ask Tiger Woods.
