Masters 2011: Is This the Year for Bubba Watson?

Aside from New Zealand's Bob Charles back in the 1950s and 1960s, there really had never been a great left handed golfer on the PGA Tour until the arrival of Phil Mickelson.
Phil is certainly the most famous lefty ever: he's won more PGA tournaments from the sinister side of the tee than anyone ever. But he wasn't the first lefthander to put on the Green Jacket backwards.
A year before Mickelson's great victory, Canadian lefty Mike Weir won the 2003 Masters. As a repeat champion, Weir will be in the field this week at Augusta. But, after Mickelson, the odds-on favorite, Weir isn't the most likely lefty to claim the season's first major.
That honor belongs to Bubba Watson. The 32-year-old has already won once this year on Tour, a one-stroke win over Mickelson back in January's AT&T at Pebble Beach. Since then he hasn't exactly set the Tour afire. Aside from a fourth-place at the Accenture Match Play, he's failed to crack the Top 20 in any of his starts and suffered a major collapse two weeks ago in Orlando.
At the Arnold Palmer he started the final round tied for third but shot a 78 (six bogeys, one double) to finish 24th.
But Watson's length (second on the Tour in driving distance) and impressive abilities from the fairway (ninth in hitting greens-in-regulation this year) have to make him a favorite this week.....far better than the 33:1 odds Vegas laid on him.
For the record, his peers like Watson's chances a lot better:
“One thing that he does extremely well, better than most players, is he has very creative shot-making. I think that’s going to lead well,†fellow lefty Phil Mickelson said. “If he pulls some of the shots that he sees, he’s going to be able to capitalize and make a lot of birdies on the par 4s, as well as the par 5s.
