Golf is not only a physically stressing game—it can take a bigger toll on a golfers mental toughness. To have a short memory and forget a bad hole, bad shot or even the final nine holes of a major when you were in the lead by four may be the biggest test of golf.
It is no doubt a golfer's biggest challenge is to be able to put behind the bad parts of anything in your game and move on through your round.
Something even the Masters champ was having difficulty doing on Thursday. Schwartzel led off his first tournament after winning his first major with a somber 73.
However, the 21-year old Irishman is doing better at forgetting his past failures at golf tournaments at the Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur this week. Surviving a brief scare where his clubs lost their way between Atlanta, Ga. and Kuala Lumpur as well.
McIlory is displaying some great mental toughness at such a young age. Many thought this, meaning his Masters collapse, could be a fall from grace. Especially to the player many named the next "Heir Apparent" to the golfing world at such a young age.
'Rohrs' shot an opening round three-under par 69 on Thursday to help get the Masters off of his mind.
When asked yet again on his final round 80 at Augusta McIlroy said, "Other people were more upset about that round than I was. I'm fine. It's one bad round. I'll live and I'm getting on with it."
To finally break through mentally, even though he would say otherwise, McIlroy followed up his first round score of 69 with an impressive eight-under par 64 to take a share of the lead in the rain-shortened second round at the Malaysian Open.
