Identity Crisis Sinks Tiger Woods at the Masters

The four Major tournaments are always must-see events for golf fans. With all of the anticipation surrounding Tiger Wood’s return at Augusta this week, this year’s Masters has been mandatory viewing since Round One on Thurs.

This tournament has been as much about watching Tiger’s personality as it has been about watching his golf shots.

We all heard the news of the car crash. Then infidelity story No. 1 came out … and the lurid decomposition of Tiger Wood’s immaculate persona began. There has perhaps never been a more disturbing dethroning of a sports god.

Tiger is now associated with unnerving visions of a serial passion for cheap sex and filthy text messages. But he has gone to rehab. He has promised to take a new, more appreciative approach to both life and the game of golf.  

So naturally, when Tiger stepped to his first tee box on Day One, everyone was waiting to see if he could keep good on his promises. Would he interact differently with his fellow golfers? Would he interact differently with the fans and vice-versa? Would he still curse and whack the ground with his clubs?

While watching Woods play his first competitive golf since his every private sin became public, it quickly became clear that this tournament would serve as an identity-crisis of sorts for Tiger.

He came to Augusta early. It was the first time he had arrived on a Sunday for the Masters. Clearly, he was anxious to get back to his life as a golfer. Could it possibly feel the same for him as it did before?

For Tiger, the week started with a tranquil step towards his re-acclimation to professional golf in the form of a practice round with Fred Couples.

Then came the media.
