Jason Dufner (Cleveland, OH) is the sole leader in the clubhouse after shooting a four-under 66 to put him at seven-under for the tournament. After bogeying two of the first three holes, he rebounded in a big way, registering birdies on seven of the final 13 holes.
After winning his first ever event at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans at the end of April, Dufner is showing the rest of the PGA that he isn’t a fluke.
Right behind Dufner at six-under are a bunch of Americans and Marc Leishman of Great Britain.
Pat Perez (Phoenix, AZ) shot a three-under; Ryan Palmer (Amarillo, TX) shot an even-par 70; Matt Kuchar (Winter Park, FL) shot a two-under 68, as did Dicky Pride (Tuscaloosa, AL). Chad Campbell (Andrews, TX) shot a four-under, and the lone non-American Leishman shot a one-under.
In all, 17 of the top 21 scores right now belong to Americans.
So why are so many statesmen tearing it up at this Irving, TX course? Well, maybe because of the lack of international opponents.
Only 40 of the 156 participants are from foreign soil. This isn’t exactly the most prestigious tournament, and many of the best players, such as Rory McIlroy, have decided to skip it.
But I’m not here to take away from the USA dominance. As the tour schedule begins to heat up and the major season looms right around the corner, it’s good to see so many Americans enjoying success.
Let’s see if they can keep it up or if this is a one tournament anomaly.
