Heritage Classic: With No Title Sponsor for 2012, Harbour Town in Its 12th Hour

The Sea Pines Resort setting is the perfect location for touring players to bring their families to enjoy the beautiful surroundings, weather and experience that this area of South Carolina provides.
Unfortunately, the location may ultimately be the tournament's downfall.
This area of South Carolina relies heavily on its tourism and golf to propel its economy. The PGA Tour event provides a huge boost in that area for the local shops, restaurants and hotels.
But compared to pretty much 99 percent of other PGA Tour stops, it is small potatoes when it comes to being near anything that would be considered a major media outlet for sports.
PGA Tour Vice President Ty Votaw disclosed on Monday that Heritage organizers were urgently seeking a replacement for the event's long time sponsor, Verizon.
"I think it's imperative for the long-term future of the event to secure a title sponsor," Votaw said.
The PGA Tour players love the event, so the tournament and its organizer know they have the players' support. Past winners include Arnold Palmer, Greg Norman and Jack Nicklaus. To more current past winners such as Stewart Cink and Jim Furyk, who is the defending champion this season.
However, it's not the support from the players or fans the Heritage needs, it's the support of big business that has also been hit by the economy that the tournament needs the most.
Heritage tournament director Steve Wilmot said the PGA Tour has either renewed or found new corporate sponsorship for 27 tournaments since the 2009 season. He is optimistic that the Heritage would be the 28th tournament to do so.
