Greenbrier Classic 2012 Leaderboard: Vijay Singh Won’t Be Able to Hold Lead

Vijay Singh’s drought has simply lasted way too long to take him seriously at the top of the 2012 Greenbrier Classic leaderboard. Sure, he’s a legend and in is day was a force to be reckoned with. However, Father Time knocked on Singh’s door a while ago and he won’t be able to overcome his age to win in West Virginia.
Reuters reported Singh was understandably pleased by his first-round performance. He said after hitting seven-under on the day (via euronews): “It’s my first good round of the year that I would say I’m probably comfortable with. And it’s a good way to start a tournament.”
Unfortunately, he won’t be able to keep it up, though.
The Big Fijan is 49 years old. No one his age has ever won a major tournament—not that the Greenbrier Classic is a major tournament, but winning on the PGA Tour when you’re that old is nearly impossible. Golf is too deep nowadays. Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, the biggest names in golf, aren’t even the best golfers anymore.
On top of the sport’s depth, there’s youth at the top of the world rankings. That competition makes it even more challenging for a veteran like Singh to compete. Of course, as he sits at the top of the leaderboard, he’s obviously competing, but golf tournaments last four days, not one.
Singh hasn’t won since 2008 for a reason. He’s done. His prime was well over a decade ago.
If Singh were to hold on for the victory, it would be a far bigger deal than Tiger—who’s currently getting all the headlines—winning. Again, however, don’t expect him to be able to pull it off.
