Greenbrier Classic 2012: Golfers to Watch Not Named Tiger Woods

While all eyes will be on Tiger throughout the 2012 Greenbrier Classic, there are plenty of other talented competitors to pay attention to. Here are four names to listen for throughout the tournament.
Phil Mickelson
Still the biggest name outside of Woods in the world of golf, Lefty will enter the tournament in need of any kind of success. Since winning the 2010 Masters, the 42-year-old only has two PGA Tour victories.
Given that he has yet to win the major, Mickelson has to be eyeing up the British Open, so Greenbrier will serve as a warm-up for him.
Scott Stallings
Scott Stallings only has one PGA Tour triumph in his entire career. It just happens to be in the Greenbrier Classic—he’s the defending champion of the tournament.
Stallings will enter the weekend with plenty of confidence, and when he tees off at 1:20 p.m. EDT, it shouldn’t take him long to emerge near the top of the leaderboard.
Webb Simpson
Webb Simpson is coming off of a victory in the U.S. Open.
While that alone should provide him with plenty of momentum going into The Open Championship, it wouldn’t hurt to get another win under his belt beforehand.
After all, he’s only won three PGA tournaments and a single major.
Jeff Maggert
Jeff Maggert, 48, hasn’t won a PGA Tour event since 2006. Before that, he hadn’t won one since the turn of the century.
He’s well on his way to ending that drought, though, as Maggert birdied three out of his first five holes and is on top in West Virginia.
